Blow Out RV Water Lines
How to Blow Out RV Water Lines
Preparing your RV's plumbing system for winter or storage is an important maintenance task. Blowing out water lines removes standing water that could otherwise freeze, crack pipes, and cause leaks or floods. Follow these steps to blow out your RV water lines:
Supplies Needed
- Air compressor
- Blowout plug
- RV antifreeze
1. Turn off water supply and disconnect hose
Detach your RV from any external water supply and remove the water inlet hose from the RV. This ensures no new water enters the system during the blowout process.
2. Drain existing water from the lines
Open all faucets and showers inside the RV. Flush the toilet several times. This will drain out as much standing water as possible beforehand.
3. Attach air compressor to blowout plug
Locate the RV's city water inlet and insert a special blowout plug. Attach an air compressor hose to the other end of the plug. Make sure it forms an airtight seal.
4. Open faucets and valves
Inside the RV, open all faucets and showerheads. Make sure all drain valves are open so compressed air can force water out and down the drain.
5. Turn on air compressor
With faucets open, turn on the air compressor. It should pressurize the lines and force any remaining water through the open faucets and down the drains.
6. Add RV antifreeze
When no more water comes out, pour RV antifreeze into sinks, shower drains, and the toilet to fill the P-traps. This prevents freeze damage in the drain system.
7. Turn off faucets and decompress lines
Close all faucets and drain valves inside the RV. Turn off the air compressor and gently remove the blowout plug to decompress the plumbing lines.
Following this blowout process will efficiently remove all standing water from your RV's plumbing system, preventing expensive freeze damage over the winter or during storage. Be sure to sanitize the water system before using it again after blowing it out.
